A rare and historically important real-photo postcard (Kilophot, Wien, 1914) showing the funeral transport of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie von Hohenberg across the Danube River at Pöchlarn, only days after their assassination in Sarajevo (28 June 1914).
The photograph captures the solemn moment when the two hearses with the coffins were ferried over the river at dawn on 4 July 1914, on their way to Schloss Artstetten, where both were laid to rest.
This postcard was issued almost immediately after the event — it bears a clear PÖCHLARN postmark dated 9.VII.1914, proving its release within just a few days of the funeral crossing. The publisher’s imprint “Kilophot, Wien” is printed on the back margin, known for their early photo reportage postcards.
The handwritten message refers to the tragic news spreading across Austria, written just days before Europe would descend into war.
A highly desirable piece for collectors of Austro-Hungarian history, Franz Ferdinand memorabilia, and pre–World War I postal history.
